"A Girl In Pink In A Town Of Blue"

Location: Chefchaouen, Morocco

There’s a side street in Chefchaouen that is quite eye catching. Although in reality, they all are. It turns into a small staircase leading up into a mount of what I like to call “Chefchaouen” blue. It’s hard not to miss it when walking through the town. Houses have small colorful ornaments that act as contrast to the blue hues of this little pathway. As I had asked a couple to take my picture doing my “PASSPORT” pose, I notice there was a small girl who tucked herself away allowing only her head to peek out behind the entrance of what may have been her house.

I took notice to her and tried to approach her in a calm manner. Now being a pediatric nurse, and a big kid as well, I usually connect with kids quite easily. However, this time was different. She looked at me as if I was an alien. In a sense, I was. Even as she somehow nodded her head yes to me asking signaling if I could take her picture, one can easily notice the emotion she was resonating. Even half of her face still hides behind the wall within the picture. This was one of my memories while spending my time in Chefchaouen.

Sometimes we connect with different types of people during our travels. Sometimes we don’t. We should remember that, in reality we are strangers to many. We should remember that we should not try to force a connection for the sake of feeling like we’ve “blended in” with the scene. Sometimes it’s best to understand our respective place within the environment of our travels.
